This Fungus Appears To ‘Attack’ Plastic: The fungus does not simply sit on the plastic surface. In laboratory observations, Aspergillus tubingensis spread across polyurethane and was followed by visible cracks, abrasions and tiny holes in the material. The findings suggest that the fungus may be affecting the plastic’s structure rather than merely growing on its surface. Polyurethane is widely used because it is durable, but that same durability makes it difficult to break down naturally.
