Take-Two Interactive has told investors that pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are running at levels neither the company nor the industry has seen before, and has held the 19 November release date firm. Then it declined to raise its financial guidance by a single dollar.
That combination is the story. Chief executive Strauss Zelnick described the early response as astonishing, then immediately talked it down: not one unit has actually been sold, and a pre-order can be cancelled. The company is not claiming a win before it happens.

Net bookings came in slightly above the top of the company’s own guidance range, driven by better-than-expected performance from the NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto franchises, with record engagement on NBA 2K26.
One detail puts the pre-order commentary in perspective. Take-Two’s first quarter closed on 30 June, and pre-orders only opened on 25 June. Zelnick’s remarks therefore describe roughly five days of activity.
The unchanged outlook is more interesting than it sounds, for two reasons.
First, $8.0 to $8.2 billion sits meaningfully below Wall Street’s consensus of around $8.62 billion. Analysts had priced in more. Shares slipped on the conservative forecast despite the enthusiastic language around pre-orders.
Second, the guidance still implies roughly 20 percent growth over FY2026’s $6.72 billion, and almost all of that has to come from one game. With the fiscal year ending on 31 March 2027, GTA 6 needs to contribute somewhere in the region of $1.3 to $1.5 billion in net bookings across roughly four and a half months on sale.
Some analysts found the caution puzzling. Take-Two’s position is that pre-order volumes are so far outside anything it has modelled before that it has no reliable basis for converting them into unit sales.
What The Outside Numbers Say
Take-Two disclosed no pre-order figures. Market research firm Newzoo has estimated that GTA 6 recorded the strongest opening week any pre-order campaign has managed, generating around $180 million (roughly ₹1,734 crore) in digital pre-orders across the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.
Newzoo projects cumulative global sales of $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion (roughly ₹31,799 crore to ₹50,108 crore) by the close of launch week. Take-Two has not commented on those projections.
Bank of America, separately, has raised its estimate for the game’s online component to $2.2 billion in net bookings during FY2028, up $900 million on its previous figure.
The $80 Question, And The Missing Disc
Zelnick defended the $80 standard edition price during the call, arguing that game prices have not tracked inflation over the past two decades. The Ultimate Edition, with extra content, sits at $100.
He also addressed the decision not to press a physical disc, noting that more than 90 percent of Take-Two’s business is already digital. That answer came in response to a question about Sony’s plan to stop manufacturing disc-based PlayStation games from January 2028, a shift that makes GTA 6’s digital-only launch look less like a gamble and more like reading the room.
The Netflix Preview
Rockstar will premiere Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix on Thursday 27 August at 3pm ET, or 8pm BST. It reaches YouTube and social channels six hours later.
Zelnick expects it to build anticipation further ahead of the November launch. Speaking to IGN, he said Rockstar viewed a Netflix premiere as a strong platform for the extended trailer. It is an unusual distribution choice for a game trailer, and a sign of how far outside the gaming press Rockstar now aims its marketing.
The call also touched on Rockstar North in Edinburgh, where 31 employees were dismissed last year, reportedly all members of the IWGB Game Workers Union. Asked whether the dispute might affect the launch, Zelnick said he was not concerned in the slightest, drawing a line between how a game is built and how a company handles labour relations.
What Happens Next
Take-Two guided second-quarter net bookings to between $1.62 billion and $1.67 billion, down from $1.96 billion a year earlier, with NBA 2K27 arriving on 4 September. Operating cash flow should exceed $1 billion for the year, and the company expects to reach a net cash position by the close of the fiscal year.
GTA 6 launches on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Take-Two became the world’s largest publicly traded video game publisher earlier this month, and the next four months will determine whether its own 20 percent growth target turns out to have been conservative.
