Sort These Out Before You Buy
Ignore the headline coverage figure. Brands quote room size at one air change per hour, which is close to useless for pollution as bad as north India’s. You want four to five air changes an hour. Divide the stated coverage by roughly five and you have the room size the machine will genuinely handle.
CADR is the number that matters. Clean Air Delivery Rate tells you how much filtered air actually comes out. Anything independently verified by AHAM or ECARF, as the Winix is, is worth more than a manufacturer’s own claim.
Work out the filter cost, not the machine cost. This is where purifiers get expensive. Coway’s 8,500-hour filters last 1.5 to 2 years. Qubo’s filters are cheap and Indian. Imported replacement filters for lesser-known brands can cost a third of the machine’s price and take weeks to arrive. Check before you buy, not after.
H13 is the standard to look for. True HEPA H13 captures 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 microns. Anything marketed as “HEPA-type” or “HEPA-like” is not the same thing.
You need activated carbon in Indian cities. HEPA handles particulates. It does nothing for VOCs, cooking smells, or the smell of smoke. If your air problem includes odours, confirm there is a carbon stage and check how much carbon by weight.
Check the noise figure in sleep mode. A purifier you switch off at night because it is too loud is a purifier doing nothing during the eight hours you are breathing hardest in one room.
