Jos Buttler entered his name in the history books on Wednesday (August 5) by becoming the leading run-scorer in T20 cricket. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batter needed 22 runs in the men’s Hundred match between Manchester Super Giants and Welsh Fire in Manchester to surpass Kieron Pollard’s tally of 14,803 runs, and he went on to score an unbeaten 51 off 20 balls.
Buttler’s knock, which included two fours and six sixes, helped him extend his T20 run tally to 14,833 in 522 matches.
After taking the No. 1 spot on the list of batters with the most runs in the 20-over format, Buttler expressed his happiness and also made a big prediction about young Indian batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
According to Buttler, someone will eventually break his record for the most runs in T20 cricket, and that player could well be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Vaibhav, who is the youngest player to represent India in international cricket, has already scored 1,670 runs in 40 T20 matches so far. The 15-year-old played 16 matches for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 and scored 776 runs to win the Orange Cap.
“It’s really cool actually to think you’ve got the most T20 runs out of everyone. Someone will surpass it one day and his name’s probably Sooryavanshi,” Buttler said after becoming the highest run-scorer in T20 cricket.
“But no, it’s a proud moment. Actually, we played against MI London last game. It would’ve been nice to get past Polly (Kieron Pollard) while he was there, sat in the dugout. Some great names on there (the list of the leading run-getters), some special players, so yeah, I’m really proud of that,” he added.
Buttler, who has scored 4,212 runs in 160 T20 Internationals for England, has played for a total of 12 teams in T20 cricket.
Apart from representing England internationally, Buttler has played for Lancashire and Somerset in the Vitality Blast, Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, Paarl Royals and Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League, and three teams — Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans — in the Indian Premier League.
