A taxpayer has questioned an unexpected tax demand after the Income Tax Department showed Rs 12,570 as payable even though Rs 12,450 had already been paid as additional tax.
The issue was raised by Pooja (@poojaofficial5), who shared the details of the case and asked why the earlier payment was not reflected correctly in the tax calculation.
The Tax Demand Raised Questions
According to the post, the taxpayer paid Rs 12,450 in additional tax while submitting her Income Tax Return (ITR). She expected the payment to settle the extra tax amount.
However, the Section 143(1) intimation later showed a demand of Rs 12,570. “Paid Rs 12,450 Extra Tax Yet the Income Tax Department Is Showing a Rs 12,570 Demand,” Pooja wrote.
The difference has raised questions about how the payment was adjusted. If the Rs 12,450 payment had been properly accounted for, the remaining amount should seemingly have been only Rs 120.
“If Rs 12,450 was already paid, should not the actual outstanding amount be just Rs 120?” the post asked.
The Taxpayer Wants To Know Where Payment Went
Pooja also questioned whether the payment had failed to reflect in the department’s records or whether there was another issue with the tax calculation.
“So where did the Rs 12,450 payment go?” she asked.
The case has led to discussion among taxpayers, with users pointing out that a mismatch between payments and tax demands can leave people unsure about what they actually owe.

Taxpayers Share Possible Reasons Online
A user suggested that the issue could be linked to a delay or error in the system, writing, “It might be an error; his 26(AS) is yet not linked with the filing system or may be some error in tax calculation at the filing level. But this is a very strange case.”
Another person said, “Taxpayers deserve clearer explanations when paid amounts don’t reflect situations like this. Situations like this properly leave everyone confused and worried for no good reason.”
A person added, “This is exactly why 143(1) intimations need to be checked carefully. If the tax was already paid, taxpayers deserve a clear explanation of why the full amount is still showing as a demand.”
Another comment read, “Paying the tax doesn’t always mean the payment has been properly adjusted.”
Someone else advised taxpayers not to ignore such notices, writing, “This is a good reminder: never ignore an Income Tax 143(1) notice. Compare the intimation line-by-line with your ITR and the tax payment challan.”
