A simple stop at a Kolkata street-side shop turned into an unexpected experience for US traveller Markus. He went in for a coffee and ended up leaving with something far more memorable — a hand-drawn caricature of himself, all for Rs 80.
Markus shared a video of his visit to the shop run by Shyama Prasad Dey, an artist who has reportedly been running the establishment for around 30 years. What caught the traveller’s attention was the artwork displayed around the small shop. Instead of simply grabbing a drink and leaving, Markus stopped to look at the drawings and chat with Dey.
Among the sketches were portraits of well-known Indian personalities. Markus particularly noticed a drawing of former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. He also spotted photographs of Dey appearing on the Bengali television show Dadagiri, hosted by Ganguly, and appeared surprised that the artist he had just met was also a television personality.
