The second Sawan Somwar will be observed on August 10, 2026. The day also coincides with Soma Pradosh Vrat, adding to its religious significance for Shiva devotees. Many observe a fast, perform Jalabhishek and offer prayers to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.
In Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva is also worshipped by those seeking relief from the difficult effects associated with Shani Dosha. If you are observing the second Sawan Somwar, here are some traditional offerings and Shiva puja remedies associated with overcoming obstacles and seeking peace.
Begin With Jalabhishek: One of the simplest ways to begin Shiva puja is by offering clean water to the Shivling while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Jalabhishek holds special importance in Shiva worship and symbolises surrender, purity and devotion.
Offer Bilva Leaves: After Jalabhishek, offer fresh bilva or bel leaves, which are considered especially dear to Lord Shiva. Traditionally, devotees prefer clean, undamaged leaves with three connected leaflets. The offering is associated with seeking Shiva’s blessings and freedom from obstacles.
Offer Milk For Peace: Milk is another traditional offering used during Shivling Abhishek and is associated with prayers for peace and well-being. Offer only a small quantity to avoid wastage, followed by clean water. Ritual practices can vary between families and regions.
Offer Honey For Harmony: Honey is traditionally associated with sweetness and harmony and may be offered during Abhishek by devotees praying for peace in relationships. Use only a small amount before offering water again and chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
Black Sesame Seeds For Shani Dosha: Black sesame seeds, or kala til, have a strong association with Shani worship. As a traditional remedy, some devotees offer black sesame seeds with water to Lord Shiva while praying for relief from delays, difficulties and other challenges believed to be associated with Shani.
Offer Fresh White Flowers: Complete the puja by offering fresh white flowers to Lord Shiva. White flowers traditionally symbolise purity, peace and sincere devotion. Avoid wilted or artificial flowers and make the offering with a simple prayer.
Chant These Shiva Mantras: Devotees can chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ 108 times during the puja. The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, beginning ‘Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam’, is also traditionally recited while praying to Lord Shiva for protection, well-being and freedom from fear.
