Onions are the backbone of almost every Indian dish, from tempering and curries to chutneys and paratha fillings. The good news: you can keep a steady supply of fresh onions (especially spring/green onions) right on your balcony with just a few pots and some kitchen scraps. This guide shows you how to grow onions in containers, tailored for Indian homes and small spaces.
Start from Kitchen Scraps or SeedsThe easiest method is regrowing from spring onion bottoms you already throw away: Save the white root end (about 2–3 cm) with roots intact after chopping spring onions. Rinse gently, then place the roots in a small glass with just enough water to cover them. Keep on a sunny windowsill or balcony ledge; change water every 2–3 days. In 5–7 days, you’ll see fresh green shoots. Once they’re 8–10 cm tall, transplant into soil. Alternatively, buy spring onion seeds or small seedlings from a nursery and sow directly in pots.
