Love fresh curry leaves in your cooking? You don’t always need to buy a nursery plant. With the right method, you can grow a healthy curry leaf plant in a pot at home using seeds or stem cuttings and a little patience.
Use fresh curry leaf seeds from ripe black berries, as older seeds lose viability quickly. You can also grow the plant from a healthy stem cutting. Fresh planting material offers the best chance of successful germination and healthy growth.
Pick a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Fill it with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil mixed with compost. Curry leaf plants dislike soggy roots, so loose, airy soil helps them establish and grow faster.
Place the pot where it receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Warm conditions encourage stronger growth and healthier leaves. If growing indoors, choose the brightest window or a sunny balcony.
Keep the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry before watering again. Feed the plant occasionally with compost or organic fertiliser during the growing season to encourage lush, leafy growth.
Regular pruning encourages the plant to become bushier and produce more leaves. Harvest only mature leaves instead of stripping entire branches. With proper sunlight, watering and care, your potted curry leaf plant can thrive for years.
